Mahaska County YMCA Dolphins complete record-breaking season
The Oskaloosa Herald
The Mahaska County YMCA Dolphins Swim Team finished out the 2013-14 campaign with a trip to the University of Minnesota campus the weekend of April 5 and 6. A total of 10 swimmers made the journey north to the regional meet to cap off a successful season that saw 70 swimmers compete for the team throughout the year.
After logging many hours in the pool, both the swimmers and coaches were happy to see the Dolphins end the season on a high note, competing against some of the best the Midwest has to offer. One of the defining characteristics of this season was the large number of records broken by team members. In all, a total of seven Mahaska County YMCA Dolphin swimming records were broken. These included:
9-10 Boys 100 individual medley 1:14.00 Carson Breon 1:14.92
11-12 Boys 100 freestyle 58.13 Jarod Miller 1:00.05
11-12 Boys 50 breaststroke 34.86 Jarod Miller 35.21
12-UP Boys 200 backstroke 2:24.42 Jack Miller 2:29.81
13-14 Boys 200 medley relay 2:02:79 Jack Miller, Jarod Miller, Carter Huyser, Nikolas Dykstra 2:03.05
13-14 Boys 200 freestyle relay 1:46.87 Jack Miller, Jarod Miller, Carter Huyser, Nikolas Dykstra 1:49.91
As impressive as the number of records broken was, it was the names taken down from the record board that may have caught the most attention. Three of the new records (200 backstroke, 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay) replaced spots formerly held by the current coaching staff. As with the end of any year, the proverbial torch must always be passed on, but this year, it rings true more than ever. For more details on the Mahaska County YMCA or the Dolphins Swim Team, stop by the Mahaska County YMCA, at 414 North Third Street in Oskaloosa or contact Ryan Harkema at (641) 673-8411 or Ryan.Harkema@MahaskaYMCA.org.
