Osky girl netters lose twice in recent meets

The Oskaloosa girls tennis team lost a pair of matches recently.
The Indians lost to Little Hawkeye Conference champion Newton Monday 9-0 in a make-up meet after losing a tough 5-4 contest to Fairfield Saturday in a Class 1A Team Tennis Regional matchup.
"We had some chances early but they pulled away (from Newton)," Oskaloosa coach Josh Bandstra said. "I was very, very pleased with the doubles play of Bethany Rowley and Morgan Holle. They were moving forward and playing doubles points the way they should be played. I think we will pair them together for our individual regional this Thursday in Pella. If they play a little more aggressively, they might be able to give one of the seeds a run for their money."
The Indians won four of the six matches in singles against Fairfield. It came down to the third and final doubles match, which the Trojans won in a tie-break.
"On Saturday, we went to Fairfield with several new faces on the varsity lineup and almost pulled out the win," Bandstra said. "We were knotted up at 4-4 and it came down to a third-set tiebreak in No. 3 doubles to advance to the afternoon round.  It was not to be but our girls showed a lot of grit and they fought for every point. I could not have asked for a better overall effort. Kailey Scharff was down early in her match but turned the tide and got us a win. Holle, Abbie Meyer and Tori Holthaus all picked up wins in their first-ever varsity singles matches of the season. Tori wasn't even supposed to play Saturday. She was there to support her teammates, but stepped up big time when our No. 6 singles player fell ill. We had a lot of close matches and it was exciting to see the girls battle until the bitter end. This was our best team effort of the season ... and unfortunately we fell a few points short.
