Osky Rebels third at World Series


The Osky Rebels had a very successful stint at the 13U Open USSSA Fastpitch Softball World Series last week.
The Rebels finished third out of 33 teams, going 5-3 at the tournament. The team is 25-31-2 record overall with 0-2 in 14UA, 3-6 in 14UB, 21-16-2 in 14UC and 1-5 in 13U Open.
The team also won the costume contest, besting 189 other entries. The Rebels dressed up like the 1976 Bad News Bears with head coach Jesse Burress dressed like Walter Matthau and Thad Jones dressing like Roy Turner.
Team member Kennedy Landgrebe sang the National Anthem last year and did so again this year.
The Rebels split their two pool-play games, losing 3-1 to NWA Nitro of Bentonville, Ark.; and beating Rockets of Chesterfield. Mo. 8-0.
In the double-elimination bracket play, the team had wins over Xplosion Fastpitch of O’Fallon, Mo. (8-1), Scorpions of St. Louis, Mo. (11-5), Tri-County Tigers of El Dorado, Kan. (5-1) and NWA Diamonds of Bentonville, Ark. (6-4). The Rebels lost to Raiders of Frontenac, Kan. (7-4) and Lady Express of McPherson, Kan. (6-2.
Landgrebe led a three-person pitching staff as she allowed 25 runs on 26 hits in 31 innings pitched. She walked eight and struck out 16. Landgrebe also had four singles and three doubles.
Reina Taylor pitched seven innings, giving up no runs on four hits. She walked two and fanned four. Taylor added three singles and a pair of doubles at the plate.
Anna Jones went two innings in the pitcher’s circle, allowing two runs on one hit while walking two. She had seven hits in the tournament, all singles.
Amelia Biggs was named the tournament’s Offensive Most Valuable Player with six singles, one double and a triple as Natasha Shipp had three singles, a double and a triple. Destiny Brown and Devan Welch both had six singles as Welch added a double. Krissy McCombs had two singles and led the team in doubles with five while Summer Smith had five singles. Ashley KIndley and Baylee Crawford both collected a single and a double while Lindsey Holmberg had three singles and a double. Sydney Sarver rounded out the offensive attack with two singles.
Besides Burress and Jones, the team was also coached by Monica Burress and Calvin Smith.
The Rebels will have a free softball camp July 22-24 at the Lacey Complex.
The camp goes from 7-30-8:30 a.m for those in grades 1-3 and from 9-10:30 a.m. for those in grades 4-6.
