Spikers compete in Newton tournament

Oskaloosa started the 2013 volleyball season at the Newton Tournament on Tuesday, going 1-4 overall.
The Indians defeated Lynnville-Sully 21-17, 12-21, 15-13 for their only match win of the night while losing matches to Carlisle 21-15, 21-15; No. 6 (Class 4A) West Des Moines Dowling Catholic 21-9, 21-11; Newton 21-14, 21-12 and No. 10 (3A) ADM 21-15, 13-21, 15-7.
Libby VanMersbergen led the Indians in kills with 20 and was 26-for-28 serving with two aces. Kailyn Risher followed with 18 kills as Leah VanMaanen had five aces and recorded 19 assists.
Taylor Richardson had a team-high 25 assists and 23 digs while VanMergsbergen recorded 31 digs and Kailey Scharff topped the team with 37 digs.
Oskaloosa plays in the Cedar Rapids Washington Tournament on Sept. 7.
