Barboza wins title, men claim silver

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Brandon Barboza recorded his best weekend of collegiate bowling to help the Statesmen bowling team to a high finish at the Blue and Gold Classic Saturday and Sunday.

William Penn placed second out of 82 teams in one of the biggest Tier 1 events of the year, tallying 9,483 pins in nine regular games. Lindenwood (Mo.) earned the title with 9,571 pins, just 88 more than the navy and gold.

In fact, the Statesmen actually led by 13 pins entering the final game, but the Lions produced their second-best showing of the weekend (1,156 pins) to come from behind.

Barboza grooved the trail for his squad, winning his first collegiate crown with a 234.8 average (2,113 pins). The sophomore eclipsed the 200-pin mark in all but one game, including a career-best 268 to open the weekend. He finished 25 pins ahead of runner-up Dan Lemiesz of Lindenwood.  A total of 504 bowlers competed in the tourney.

It is the first individual title for the program since Sean Rangel won the Clarke Conference Invitational last February.

Cameron Foster was also in the top-20, taking 14th overall with a 213.4 clip.

Piet Schaeffer, with a 206.3 mark, and Drew Balta, with a 206.0 average, were the next-highest finishers, while Conan Mackey concluded the varsity team’s scoring at 193.1. All five bowlers started all nine games for the Statesmen.

William Penn competed with a junior varsity squad as well. It performed strongly as well, placing 34th overall with 8,494 pins.

Travis Scott was the leader of the second team with a 195.9 average, while Nathan Namanny, at 187.3, and Michael Applegate, at 181.7, also bowled all nine games.

Connor Frederick averaged 180.9 pins over eight games, while Eric Smith knocked down 208.7 pins per game over seven games. Cory Rissman wrapped it up with a 167.3 clip in three games.

William Penn is off three weeks, returning to action Feb. 9-10 to compete in the Clarke Conference Invitational in Dubuque.
