Three William Penn athletes earned Athlete of the Week honors from the Midwest Collegiate Conference on Monday.
Jalen Wilson and Alex Edwards earned the opportunity to compete against the NAIA’s best in March, and for their accomplishments last weekend, picked up the honors in field and track, respectively while Orielle Thomas was accorded the weekly honor in women’s basketball.
Wilson is now a two-time winner in his career, while Edwards received his first laurel.
In surpassing the division’s automatic-qualifying standard, Wilson also broke the school record in the long jump with a distance of 23-8 at the UNI Open.
Edwards was on a similar plane of success, breaking the program’s 800-meter run record with an NAIA “B” standard time of 1:56.30.
Thomas, now a three-time winner this year (four in career), received the laurel by helping William Penn to wins over AIB and Clarke. The Lady Statesmen (11-7, 2-1 MCC) are four games over .500 for the first time this year.
The senior posted avrages of 18.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Her week was highlighted with a 20-point, 10-rebound showing versus AIB. She shot 84.2 percent from the floor and also notched 2.5 steals, 2.0 assists and 1.0 block per contest.
For the year, Thomas is averaging a double-double of 13.9 points and 11.7 rebounds (eight double-doubles). She is aveaging 27 steals, 20 assists and seven blocks a game. The forward leads the league in rebounding, is third in scoring and is fourth in shooting percentage and steal average. She is also third nationally in rebounding.
