Indians send four wrestlers to state meet

NEWTON —

The Oskaloosa wrestling team had been battling illness for the past couple of weeks with some of its top wrestlers missing some action.
Those who have missed action recently came back strong as the Indians finished third at a Class 3A district tournament Saturday, sending four to this week's state tournament in the process.
The Indians had 141 points to nose out host Newton by two points. Cedar Rapids Prairie won the tournament with 151.5 points while Iowa City West was runner-up with 226.5.
Oskaloosa will have four representatives at the state tournament, which begins Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
The Indians will have freshman Drew Sams at 106 pounds, junior Skylar DeJong, senior Mason Wisse at 182 and senior Drea Lamb at 195.
Only Wisse claimed a district title as he pinned all three of his opponents after returning from a bout of mononucleosis.
Wisse wasted little time in reaching the final against Donovan Doyle of Iowa City West. Wisse pinned Ottumwa's Levi Cobler in just 49 seconds then put Marshalltown's Ben Reblik on his back in 3:19. In the final against Doyle, it took the Oskaloosa senior a little longer, but would eventually pin his opponent at the very end of the second period.
"We're proud of our young guys and our older guys," Oskaloosa coach Brandon Graham said. "I am absolutely satisfied with the team's performance today. I'm very, very proud of them."
Sams and DeJong had to go through wrestlebacks while Lamb, despite losing in his final, qualified for the state tournament after beating the third-place winner earlier in the day.
Sams faced Koby Hull of Newton in the wrestleback and posted the 5-3 win while DeJong manhandled Iowa City West's Carter Rohweder for the state-tournament berth. DeJong recorded a technical fall in 3:43 after getting out to a 19-2 lead midway in the second period.
