Quick start stops Indians

When a team spots a 10-point lead to its opponent, especially one that’s fighting for first place in the conference, it’s tough to overcome that deficit.
Oskaloosa did just that to Grinnell and the Tigers rolled to a 74-36 victory in Little Hawkeye Conference action Tuesday night.
Six of those points came directly off Indian turnovers and the Tigers (8-1, 4-1) never looked back.
While Oskaloosa (1-7, 0-4) lost for the seventh straight time, did have a bright moment in the game.
Coming into the contest without making a single 3-pointer, the Indians knocked down a pair of them — both by Alexis Westercamp.
“It was good to see some girls shooting with confidence and Alexis was able to get a couple go in and they count the same if they bank in or not,” Oskaloosa coach Steve Kaisand said.
Deja Jackson, who led all scorers with 22 points, converted two steals into a pair of baskets and added another bucket to the 10-0 lead with 4:41 left in the opening quarter.
Westercamp, who had a team-high 12 points for the Indians, buried a 3-ball with just under 4 minutes remaining in the period to get her team on the scoreboard.
Oskaloosa went nearly the rest of the quarter without  point until Asia Laudermilch’s basket with 12 seconds left made it a 23-5 game at the quarter break.
While the Indians weren’t able to cut much of the deficit down, Kaisand was happy how the team competed the rest of the game.
“I thought the girls really showed a lot of perseverance in the second half and continuing to work,” he said. “We got some hustle plays in the second half. We played our best half of basketball in the second half and the third quarter was our best quarter (15 points). Some good things to go back on and Grinnell had too much shooting tonight. Not too many high school teams hit 11 3s on you.”
