Indians sweep Cardinal to finish second in LHC

NEWTON —

Oskaloosa softball coach Jay Harms wanted to know how his team would bounce back after losing to Pella the night before.
The Indians came back strong, as he would had hoped, as they swept Newton 5-1 and 3-1 to close out the Little Hawkeye Conference season Tuesday night.
Oskaloosa (23-10 overall, 13-5 LHC) finished in second place in the conference with the sweep.
Peyton Zickefoose singled and doubled to lead Oskaloosa in the first game. She also drove in a run as well as scoring one. Kylie Hill had a two-run double while Kylee Silliman had two singles and one RBI.
Alexis Groet improved to 16-4 on the season as she allowed the one run on three hits and struck out 10.
Zickefoose had another good game in the second game of the doubleheader as she had another single and a double while driving in a run. Shawni Wills had two singles and an RBI while Bethany Rowley had a single.
Silliman gave just the one run on two hits as she struck out six to go to 6-4 on the year.
“The girls did a good job of bouncing back after losing the tough one to Pella,” Harms said. “We hit the ball better and got two great pitching performances in very hot conditions. The 23 wins tied last year’s win output. This team has had a very satisfying regular season. Now the second season begins and everybody starts out with a 0-0 record.”
The Indians start Class 4A regional play Saturday night against either Mount Pleasant or Fairfield in Oskaloosa at 7 p.m.
