Osky take extra-inning affair with Norwalk to gain doubleheader split
The Oskaloosa Herald
It was a very long night for the Oskaloosa softball team on Wednesday night.
The Indians had a scheduled doubleheader with Little Hawkeye Conference leader and ninth-ranked Norwalk. The teams ended up playing nearly three games as they split the two contests.
The Warriors scored three runs in the sixth inning for a 3-0 win in the opener. The second game lasted a long time as they squads went 12 innings before the Indians (20-9, 10-4) tallied five runs in the top of the 12th in an 8-3 victory and handing Norwalk its first loss in the conference.
The first game of the doubleheader was typical of the offensive struggles the Indians have had lately.
They garnered four hits — one more than the Warriors — but could not cash in any of them for runs.
Aubrey Miller had a double while Kelsie Tomlin, Callie Arnold and Peyton Zickefoose all singled.
Alexis Groet took the loss, giving up the three runs on six hits and striking out two.
The second game was a much different story for Oskaloosa as it collected 12 hits and breaking open a tie game with the five-run 12th.
The Indians had 47 at-bats in the game as Miller singled twice and added a double. Arnold had a single, double and three RBI while Kylee Silliman drove in two runs and also had a single and a double.
Groet pitched the complete 12 innings, allowing three runs on six hits. She walked four, but struck out seven to improve to 14-3 on the season.
The Indians return from the July 4th holiday Friday with a road contest against Grinnell.
