Seniors lead Osky to come-from-behind win over Demons

Things did not start off well for Oskaloosa with its non-conference matchup with Washignton on Senior Night Tuesday.
Elijah Wood smacked a three-run homer in the opening inning to give the Demons a 4-0 lead before the Indians got up to bat.
The Indians (16-11) answered with a leadoff home run from Nick Rutledge, one of three seniors honored prior to the game, and went on to a wild 13-9 victory.
“It was just a battle,” Oskaloosa coach Clint Gingerich said. “They scored four runs and we came right back and scored three. From then on, it was going to be a full seven-inning game.”
The two starting pitchers — Michael Gier of Washington and Peyton Crouse of Oskaloosa — failed to record a single out in the first inning.
After getting behind 4-0 after the first half inning, Oskaloosa came back with three of its own as Rutledge hit his second home run of the season and Mitchell Schaffner drew a walk.
That knocked Gier from the game and in came Mason Quigley.
He walked TJ Boyle, who was replaced by Jason Beebe as a courtesy runner. After a sacrifice bunt advanced the runners a base, Joey Sterner bounced the ball back to Quigley, who threw the ball away to allow Schaffner to score. Seniior Travis Gile hit a sacrifice fly to score Beebe to make it 4-3.
The Indians were down 7-3 going to the fifth when they tallied three runs to pull to within one.
Rutledge, who was 4-for-5 on the night, had a one-out single as Schaffner walked. Rutledge later scored on the back end of a double steal. Boyle was issued a walk and Colton Swanson was hit-by-pitch to load the bases. One out later, Gile, who collected a pair of doubles in the game, drilled a two-run double to cut the deficit to 7-6.
