The honor may be bittersweet, but a humble Steve Ehret has his 200th career football victory. He reached that pinnacle with a 34-14 victory over English Valleys. The victory came against one of Ehret’s former players Bronson McCulley, who coaches the Bears. Ehret said he knows McCulley will be an exceptional coach as time goes on.A state record mistakenly showed Ehret had reached the 200-win mark last season, but Ehret was quick to point out it was wrong. So it was to 2013 when he would once again have the opportunity.
Coming into the week Ehret was two wins short then a set of unusual circumstances gave the team a win over WACO, whom it lost to 29-0 last week. WACO coaches realized over the weekend they had utilized an ineligible player and self-reported to the Iowa High School Athletic Association and North Mahaska was awarded a 1-0 victory.
Ehret said it was unfortunate situation and that the WACO team was not gaining an advantage with the use of the player. The score was 20-0 at halftime. The player entered the game sometime in the second half.Ehret was presented a plaque in commemoration of the victory. His wife Polly received a bouquet of roses. His children, Alicia, son and assistant coach Nick, and daughter Carly, joined him for the honor. All of the victories have come at the school for the William Penn grad. Ehret teaches physical education and serves as the school’s athletic director.
