No. 11 Indians survive Huskies' rally

DES MOINES —

To say the Oskaloosa-Des Moines Hoover softball game was a bit wild would be an understatement.
The 11th-ranked Indians and the Huskies combined for 23 hits and stranded 29 runners on base in their non-conference game Wednesday night.
Oskaloosa struck for five runs in the top of the ninth inning only to see Des Moines Hoover's rally fall just short in a 10-9 victory.
"We led the whole game but just couldn't put Hoover away," Oskaloosa coach Jay Harms said. "We just kept finding ways to work out of jams in the seventh and eighth, which took us to the wild ninth inning. We erupted for 5 runs in top of 9th on 5 hits and 3 Hoover errors to take a 10-5 lead going into the bottom of the 9th. Hoover had the bases loaded with 1 out trailing by two runs, but Kelsie Tomlin made a diving catch in center to save two runs. The next batter singled to drive in Hoover's 9th run and then catcher Shawni Wills made a circus catch on a pop up behind the plate to end the game.
"It wasn't the prettiest but I am proud of how the kids kept their composure and just kept battling all night — there were some close callsat the plate and on the bases on both sides but that is part of the game and you just have to work through it. Hoover has some fine hitters and athletes. They are a lot better than their record shows. Very nice win for the girls."
Wills singled twice and added a double for the Indians, who are at Newton Friday night. Aubrey Miller, Kylie Hill, Peyton Zickefoose and Kylee Silliman all collected two hits.
Alexis Groet ran her record to 7-0 with a rough, yet good day in the pitcher's circle. She gave up the nine runs on 11 hits, walked 10, but struck out 11 in going the distance.
