Osky records 1-2 mark at Iowa City West tourney

IOWA CITY —

Oskaloosa won one of three games at the Iowa City West Tournament over the weekend, splitting against highly-ranked opponents.
The Indians (27-5), ranked 10th in Class 4A, lost 4-1 in the first game on Friday to Davenport West then upset No. 5 (Class 4A) Cedar Rapids Xavier 4-1 on a grand slam by Aubrey Miller.
Oskaloosa played fifth-ranked (Class 5A) Muscatine on Saturday and suffered a 10-0 defeat.
The Indians scored their run against Davenport West in the sixth inning as Peyton Zickefoose drove in Callie Arnold with a single. Arnold and Kailyn Risher had two hits apiece.
Alexis Groet (13-3) took the loss for Oskaloosa as she struck out six and gave up nine hits.
"West os a team with seven slappers and they did a nice job of putting pressure on us all game long," Oskaloosa coach Jay Harms said. "A little disappointed that we didn't play better to start the game. It's our first loss to an unranked team this season."
The tables were turned in Friday's second game as Miller belted a grand slam in the fourth inning for all the runs Kylee Silliman (14-2) would need against the Saints.
Silliman, who singled and doubled in the win, allowed the one run on seven hits and fanned three.
"Kylee struck out Xavier's leading hitter, (came in hitting around .600) on four pitches," Harms said. "They had runners on first and second at the time.
"The girls really rebounded from the loss to Davenport West and came to play against a very good Xavier team. A huge win — they had only lost two games this season, one to Iowa City West (ranked 7th in 5A) and the other to Pleasant Valley (ranked 8th in 5A)."
Oskaloosa had the big fourth inning — Kelsie Tomlin singled, Kailyn Risher was hit by a pitch, Callie Arnold reached on an error and then Miller hit the ball over the left field fence for her fourth homer of the season to put the Indianss on top 4-1. Silliman then was able to control the big bats of Xavier's the rest of the way to win her 14th game of the season.
