Groet perfect vs. Tigers

OSKALOOSA —

Oskaloosa freshman pitcher Alexis Groet was unhittable as the No. 8 Indians blanked Grinnell 10-0 at Lacey Recreation Complex.
In fact, the Tigers never had a baserunner as Groet struck out 13 of the 18 batters she faced in throwing a perfect game.
“She threw the ball well tonight,” Oskaloosa coach Jay Harms said. “Her ball was moving pretty well and was around the strike zone a lot more than she had been. That was good to see.
“I was debating whether to throw Kylee (Silliman) or her because both have been throwing really well. Although Grinnell had only won three games this year, I wanted Bear (Groet) yo really compete and see what she could do.”
Groet (13-1) recorded two strikeouts in every inning except the sixth.
“The girls did a great job of refocusing after we had to move the game to Lacey and postpone Senior Night,” Harms said.
The game was played at Lacey after rains earlier on Friday caused the field to be unplayable.
For Grinnell’s sake, maybe the field at Lacey should have been unplayable as well.
The Indians scored four runs in the second inning and the rout was on.
They sent nine batters to the plate for those four runs.
Alexis Westercamp, who had a single and a double, reached on a one-out hit after Aubrey Miller drew a walk. Kailyn Risher had one of her three hits on an infield single and Miller and courtesy runner Anna Jones on a throwing error. Bethany Rowley and Bridgette Richard walked and two batters later, Callie Arnold had a two-riun single for the four-run cushion.
Miller led the scoring parade with four runs scored as six others had one run apiece.
“We left runners (on base) early and we talked about that before the game,” Harms said. “We’re going to look into this game with Grinnell like we’re playing Dallas Center-Grimes or Fairfield. We’ve got to plate the runs. We stranded too many runners and have to pick people up when we’ve got them in scoring positions. We had the bases loaded with nobody out and didn’t score. We just can’t do that. Against Grinnell, you’re going to have other opportunities. Against really good ball clubs, that’s not going to happen. We’ve got to do a better job in that.
