Lowary leads top-ranked Fillies past Indians

OSKALOOSA —

Oskaloosa hosted Dallas Center-Grimes Friday night in a battle of unbeaten teams in the Little Hawkeye Conference.
The Fillies, the defending Class 4A state champions, came into the game 12-0 overall and ranked No. 1 in the state while the Indians were 14-0 and 10th in the state.
So something had to give.
Unfortunately for Oskaloosa, Dallas Center-Grimes sent two-time Pitcher of the Year Paige Lowary to the circle and the senior proved the accolades were not wrong as she held the Indians hitless, fanned 13 as the Fillies won 1-0.
Lowary (7-0) issued two walks to the Indians, who left four runners on base.
“When you’ve got a girl like that, the way she can hit, the way she can throw, you can why she’s where she’s at,” Oskaloosa coach Jay Harms said. “She’s been the Pitcher of the Year the last two years and will be playing in the SEC for Missouri, that’s why where they’re at. They’re No. 1 and we gave them all they want tonight. Hopefully, the kids will hang in there and not get down and get ready to take care of business next week.”
Early on in the contest, the Fillies ran themselves out of some scoring opportunities as Lowary was called for runner’s interference going to third base and Rachel Lowary was thrown out at third base by Oskaloosa catcher Alexis Westercamp.
The Indians turned the Fillies away in the third after Paige Danno walked and was replaced by courtesy runner Abby Larson. Larson was sacrificed to second and Paige Lowary also drew a walk. Rachel Lowary grounded the ball to Oskaloosa first baseman Bethany Rowley, who threw home to get Larson for the second out of the inning.
Dallas Center-Grimes broke the scoreless duel in the fourth as Allison O’Brien had an infield single and Dana Heritage doubled to left, Tabitha Taylor grounded out to score O’Brien for what proved to be the only run of the night.
