Pederson steps down as Activities Director

The Oskaloosa Community School District will have a new activities director later this summer.
Kevin Pederson was in his office for the final time Monday just hours before beginning his retirement, which he announced earlier this year. Pederson has been the activities director at Oskaloosa for eight years with 17 more years at Guthrie Center, LeMars and Centerville.
He decided to retire because after a quarter-century of doing the same job, it was time for a change.
“One of the most difficult things we’re facing is finding quality people, quality teachers that want to put in the extra time in extra curriculars as a coach or a sponsor,” Pederson said. “It’s very difficult finding lower-level coaches — ninth-grade or JV coaches.”
He began his career as activities director while he was teaching and coaching in Guthrie Center.
“The athletic director was tied in with the principal job and the principal wanted to pass that off to someone else,” Pederson said. “I had a couple of study halls and they said, ‘We’ll give you a couple of hours to be athletic director.’ Little did I know before long I was the athletic director at Guthrie Center. Then I took the activities director job at LeMars, then went to Centerville to be assistant principal and AD.
“Then this job opened up as a full-time AD when Dave Beaty retired. The assistant principal/AD job are pretty difficult because you have two full-time jobs and trying to balance things and they weren’t working out. Full-time activities director you devote all of your time to the activities, your sports and extra-curricular.”
While most people know Pederson has the hand in scheduling all the sporting events at Oskaloosa, he also does the scheduling for events such as band, speech and all the other activities at the school.
