Warhawks edged by Belle Plaine

BELLE PLAINE —

Brant DeMeulenaere recorded four steals but none was more crucial than the last one.
The Belle Plaine freshman stole the ball with six seconds left in the game to give his Plainsmen a 51-50 victory over North Mahaska.
DeMeulenaere missed a pair of free throws that would have put Belle Plaine up by three, but in transition was able to steal the ball away as North Mahaska was trying to set up a final shot in the final six seconds.
North Mahaska junior Adam Pothoven drained a long-range 3-pointer with 6.7 seconds to play to cut the lead to one, but the steal ended the opportunity.
Pothoven had a strong floor night scoring a team-high 12 points.
He also had five rebounds, five assists, four steals and a blocked shot. Trent Wanders again had a good shooting night from the arc with three treys and finishing with 11 points.
Senior Connor Hehli scored another double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
He was also credited with seven blocks.
Belle Plaine’s Trey Squires scored 17 points including the game-winning free throw with 16 seconds left to play. He also led the team in rebounding with 16. Justin Jacobi also finished in double figures with a game-high 18 and grabbed nine rebounds.
North Mahaska’s Trent Roose scored seven points and Brant Fleener added six.
North Mahaska will travel to Brooklyn on Friday to take on BGM.
