William Penn women battle at conference

STERLING, Ill. —

Although the Statesmen women’s indoor track and field team was short on quantity of athletes Friday, its fight was of tremendous quality at the Midwest Collegiate Conference Championships.
William Penn tallied 37.5 points to place sixth out of six teams. St. Ambrose defended its crown with 213.5 points.  Grand View's Hannah Stouffer was named MCC Track Athlete of the Year, while Trineisha Gray of St. Ambrose collected MCC Field AOY laurels. SAU head coach Dan Tomlin was named MCC Coach of the Year.
Meaghan Foster guided the efforts, placing second in the shot put at 39-8.5 and fifth in the weight throw at 51-9.75.
Raveen Rhone was next on the board by taking third in the triple jump at 33-9.5.
Emmanuela Meneide scored points in the 55-meter dash (4th, 7.58 seconds), but just missed the top eight for the second time, finishing 10th in the 200-meter dash (27.63 seconds).
The 4x400-meter relay squad was fifth in a time of 4:30.52, while Alora Simmons matched that finish with a high jump of 4-10.5.
Tarah Alexander was sixth in the 800-meter run in 2:30.82 and Whitley Schertz tallied a seventh-place showing in the pole vault at 7-9.75.
Cierra Threats (7.94 seconds in the 55-meter dash) and Rosemary Bailey (20:29.17 in the 5,000-meter run) also scored points for the Statesmen by placing eighth.
Deja Lewis just missed scoring twice, but had a great day nonetheless. The freshman broke the school’s one-mile run in a time of 5:48.38, and was also 10th in the 3,000-meter run in 11:45.92. Shaniece Dishmon was also 10th in the 55-meter dash in 7.77 seconds.
“This is the proudest I have been of our teams,” Penn coach Allen Friesen said. “Almost all of the 12 women we brought scored points. They were undermanned, but battled like true champions today.”
William Penn travels to Dubuque next Saturday to compete in the Dubuque Spartan Invitational.
