NM’s Boyle signs letter with Western Illinois

NEW SHARON — The 2011-12 high school basketball season was a very memorable one for North Mahaska’s Mallory Boyle.

The 5-foot-11 guard led the Warhawks to a perfect 28-0 record and the Class 1A state championship last March.

Boyle, who was a first-team all-stater by the Iowa Newspaper Association  a year ago, Wednesday signed a national letter of intent to continue her basketball career at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Ill.

Boyle, who will be a senior this year, averaged 13.6 points and 5.7 rebounds a game for North Mahaska last season. She also had 110 steals and 99 assists as the Warhawks hope to repeat as state champions this season.

The Leathernecks, who play in the Missouri Valley Conference, are 1-1 this season after going 13-19 in 2011-12.

As soon as she made her unofficial visit, Boyle found the university she wanted to continue her cage career.

“After my unofficial visit, I really liked the coaches and I knew that would be the place I want to go,” she said.

“I met the team after I verbally committed and they played a lot like my AAU team did, man (defense) and motion offenses. That’s just how I like to play.”

Boyle was a third-team all-state selection by the INA after he sophomore season and brings a 11.0 points and 5.9 rebounds a game average into her final scholastic season on the hardwood.

Boyle, who is 145 points away from the 1,000-point mark, is a good shooter, but said she probably needs to get  faster as well as getting a quicker shot to play at the Division I level.

“I’m hoping I can keep bettering myself and come in as a freshman making an impact on the team,” she said.

Boyle plans on  being a biology major in hopes of getting into physical therapy at graduate school.
