William Penn sweeps last two weeks of MCC baseball awards

OSKALOOSA — The Statesmen baseball team has been tearing it up on the awards circuit lately, claiming the last four Midwest Collegiate Conference weekly honors.

Kyle Mauricio has been named league Player of the Week two times in a row, while Brian Williams  was named last week’s Pitcher of the Week and Jared Shoning claimed this week’s honor.

Mauricio hit .545 with four runs and one RBI two weeks ago.  He was even better this past week with a .571 clip (two RBI, one run).

The left fielder is the team’s best hitter at .469 (30-for-64) with 16 RBI and 16 runs scored. He also is pacing the Statesmen in on-base percentage (.539), stolen bases (6) and hit-by-pitches (6).

Williams nearly posted a no-hitter two weekends ago, limiting Martin Luther (Minn.) to just one base knock.  He did not permit a hit through the first six frames and finished with a one-hitter.  The junior struck out three against one walk.

For the year, Williams is 1-2 with a 7.59 earned run average. Over 10 2/3 innings, he has eight strikeouts against seven walks. Opponents are hitting .225 versus Williams.

Shoning was solid in relief last weekend, keeping Grand View off the board for 2 2/3 innings. He struck out two batters in his lone appearance.

For the year, the freshman is 1-0 with a 4.12 ERA.  In 19 2/3 frames, he has 23 strikeouts with nine walks. Opponents are hitting .263 against Shoning.
