Free throws key in Panthers' win over Indians

While Oskaloosa was unable to get past Mount Pleasant in non-conference action Saturday, the Indians were able to get the better of the Panthers in the second half.
Oskaloosa (1-11) outscored Mount Pleasant 32-29 in the second half, but the Panthers tallied 25 points in the opening quarter en route to the 67-53 victory.
“I thought we played a very good second half,” Oskaloosa coach Zach Temmel said. “We played with the most heart we’ve played with all year in that second half. We talked about coming out with intensity and obviously we didn’t do that at the start of the game. But we had a lot of positives in the second half.”
Spencer Medlin recorded Oskaloosa’s first points of the game 39 seconds into the first quarter, but Mount Pleasant ran off eight straight points on 3-pointers from Trey Magnani and Brandon Sanchez.
Two more baskets by the Panthers for a 15-4 lead caused Tremmel to call and time out. He was later whistled for a technical foul and Mount Pleasant increased the margin to 15 on a Sanchez free throw and a 3-ball from Magnani.
The Panthers would take a 38-21 edge to intermission and when the teams came out for the second half, the Indians had more fire in their eyes.
They scored four straight points early in the third quarter to offset the points Mount Pleasant had. A 7-1 run by Oskaloosa cut the deficit to 45-32 going to the fourth quarter as Ryan Reiter, who led all scores with 21 points, had a basket followed by a 3-pointer from Nick Waters and a steal by Nate VanVeldhuizen.
The Indians were able trim the margin to 9 twice in the fourth quarter after the Panthers took a 16-point advantage early in the period.
The duo of Medlin and Reiter did the honors as Medlin had four points and Reiter tallied five, including a 3-pointer from the top of the key to make it a 50-41 game.
