Warhawks drop game to Trojans on Senior Night

Four-year-old Addison Vander Beek’s sweet voice during the National Anthem was the direct opposite of the tune sung in the North Mahaska’s seniors’ last home game.
Pleasantville broke open a scoreless game in the second quarter with two scores en route to a 34-14 win.
“Third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh different verse,” said North Mahaska Coach Steve Ehret. “Discipline. Doing our job and not making mistakes.
“We are not a second-and-nine (yard) team, we are a second-and-six, second-and-five team. We are driving and boom we get a penalty. I have been doing this 33 years and I am still frustrated. We practice and practice, but somehow I have to get through to them that they have to do their jobs.”
Pleasantville’s defense grabbed four interceptions and recovered a fumble, but scored twice on those turnovers. Another interception went for a touchdown, but came back on a face mask for the penalty-prone Trojans.
It was North Mahaska’s defense stepping up in the opening period when Karrson Stodghill sacked Pleasantville quarterback Zeb Adreon and the third play of their first possession. On the next play Jakob Bortel intercepted Adreon to snuff out the drive. Unfortunately for the Warhawks, Patrick Sheehey jumped on a North Mahaska fumble to reverse the field.
Pleasantville moved the ball into Warhawk territory but on third down-8 yards to go Austin Lanphier sacked Adreon to force a punt. North Mahaska held the ball to the end of the quarter and then Sheehey intercepted Justin Richards’ pass and ran for a touchdown, but was called back on the penalty.
Adreon hooked up with Sheehey for an 18-yard score then following another interception Adreon hooked up with Riley Kirchau for a score two minutes later.
The play in the second quarter that brought Warhawk fans to their feet was rip away of the ball by Brock Pollpeter and a 42-yard return. That set North Mahaska up at the Pleasantville 35-yard line, but the Warhawks couldn’t convert.
