Statesmen look to remain unbeaten against Warriors

The Statesmen football team will look to begin its rise back into the playoff race as it hosts Waldorf in Midwest League play Saturday.
William Penn (2-3, 0-1 MWL) will meet the Warriors (1-4, 0-0 MWL) at 1 p.m. in Lacey Complex Stadium. The Statesmen have fallen out of the top 25 (also not receiving votes) for the first time since early 2010, a run of 42-straight ratings receiving at least one vote.
Saturday is also Fill the Stadium Day as well as Coaches vs. Cancer Day. All proceeds made will be donated to the American Cancer Society and Mahaska Health Partnership. Fans are encouraged to wear pink.
Saturday’s game can be followed on the radio (740 AM) as well as two different internet sites:

William Penn is 6-0 all-time in its series against Waldorf, including winning last year’s meeting 48-14.
The Statesmen gained 459 of their 469 yards on the ground, while the defense bent a bit in giving up 343 yards. Five turnovers were forced, though, including two in their red zone. One of those takeaways was returned 96 yards for a touchdown by Brock Peery.
Perry King also had two interceptions, returning one of those 39 yards for a score. Offensively, Sam Tvedt rushed for a career-high 133 yards, while Evan Ressler hit paydirt twice.
William Penn failed to keep pace with a high-powered St. Ambrose offense in a 53-34 Midwest League loss last Saturday.
The 11th-ranked Fighting Bees, who outgained the Statesmen 582-448, only led 21-14 at the break. William Penn had a difficult third quarter and could not rally in losing its first Homecoming game since 2003.
Shawn Davis rushed for 106 yards and three scores, while Tyler Hafner rushed for 90 yards and passed for 110.
Jacob Batterson led the defense with 15 tackles.
