COUNCIL BLUFFS —
The Oskaloosa Lightning 13 AAA baseball team coming off a state runner-up finish for the second time in the last three years will take the field this weekend in the Battle of the Border.
The games between Nebraska and Iowa’s top teams will be Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, the Lightning face Omaha Suburban Stampede Blue at 12:30 p.m. then play the Bellevue Braves at 5 p.m. On Sunday, the Lightning play the Bellevue Bruins at 10:30 a.m. and the Nebraska Bison Black from Lincoln at 3 p.m.
“It is an honor to be representing Iowa at this event,” Lightning manager Doug DeKock said. “This will be our second time playing in it and the kids have earned the right with outstanding play last year. The Lightning team took a spring break trip to Houston, Texas, and played five games while also enjoying southern sun. We are in hopes that the Texas trip will give us a little edge this weekend. We started playing good baseball when we left.”
The Lightning have a 40-game schedule this year. The team is looking forward to taking the final step and become state champions.
Oskaloosa will be playing Fairfield at Lacey Complex, April 28, in a doubleheader.
