Women get into win column with corner kick goals

OSKALOOSA —

Alyce Correia scored twice and Silvia Munoz assisted on all of the squad’s goals as the William Penn women’s soccer team picked up its first victory of the year with a 3-1 win over Friends (Kan.) to open the William Penn Classic Friday.
The Statesmen (1-4), who held a 23-6 edge in shots, dominated from the start. Correia got things going at the 7:03 mark when she put in her first collegiate goal off a double assist that started from Munoz’s corner kick and was sent through by Emmanuela Meneide.
2012 redshirt Kelly Button also notched her first goal in the navy and gold in the 38th minute. Munoz’s corner was again deflected, this time by Kirsty Fraser to Button who put the ball in the back of the net.
Correia was able to record her second goal of the day by putting in another Munoz corner by herself. The final goal came at the 85:55 juncture. Correia and Button paced William Penn with six shots each.
William Penn had the shutout intact until the final seconds, but the Eagles (1-2) broke up the perfection with their lone score with 39 ticks left on the clock.
Laura Gentry had three saves in the win.
“I am delighted for our girls that they were finally rewarded for the amount of work they have put in,” Head Coach Willie McGowan said. “The last couple of games were tough to not get a good result, so this was a nice release for our team. Hopefully it will spur us to more wins.”
“I thought our forward line and midfield did very well on both sides of the ball,” McGowan added. “To score all three goals from corners really showed that we believed in each other to make the runs and that we also put quality deliveries into the box.”
