Barboza, Underwood one win shy of semifinals

LINCOLN, Neb. — Brandon Barboza and Breanne Underwood pushed the best in the nation to the limit Tuesday, but came up just short at the xbowling Intercollegiate Singles Championships.

Both individuals reached the quarterfinals before being ousted to end their individual campaigns. For Underwood, a graduate student whose team did not qualify for nationals, her collegiate career actually came to close Tuesday.

Underwood had the better qualifying finish of the two, placing sixth out of 16 players with an eight-game tally of 1,589.  She managed a high score of 235 in game three and knocked down at least 185 pins in all eight games.

As the No. 6 seed, the graduate student earned a first-round bye.  She then met up with No. 14 seed Erin Michelfelder of Lindenwood (Mo.) and dispatched her 668-530 in a three-game set. She could not continue her day to Sunday’s semifinal, falling 741-582 to No. 3 seed Daria Kovalova of Wichita State. The Shockers had three of the top seven qualifiers, including No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 and all three advanced to the semifinals.  No. 5 Kristina Mickelson of Nebraska will join the Wichita State trio.

Barboza qualified 14th out of 24 competitors with a tally of 1,689, including a high score of 245 twice. The sophomore started an impressive Cinderella story with a 583-506 first-round victory over Paul Garwood of William Paterson (N.J.).  He then faced off against No. 3 seed Andy Mills of Viterbo (Wis.) and upset his fellow Midwest Collegiate Conference foe 665-598.

His nationals experience ended in the quarterfinals, however, with a 698-597 loss to No. 6 Aaron Lorincz of Saginaw Valley State (Mich.).  Also joining Lorincz in the semifinals is No. 1 Stephen Conn of Morehead State (Ky.), No. 4 Brock Finch of Urbana (Ohio), and No. 7 Ronnie Fujita of Lindenwood (Mo.).

Barboza will conclude his sophomore campaign later this week as a member of the Statesmen men’s bowling team. The squad will battle against 15 other teams in the xbowling Intercollegiate Team Championships that began Thursday.
