Batterson, Kerrigan receive POWs in final week

OSKALOOSA — Safety Jacob Batterson and kicker/punter Marcus Kerrigan finished off their regular season with one more honor as the Midwest League Player of the Week awards were announced Monday.

Batterson earned his first Defensive POW of the year (second of career), while Kerrigan collected his fourth Special Teams POW laurel of the fall (10th all-time). They led William Penn (9-2, 5-1 MWL) to a 17-12 victory over Grand View, helping the Statesmen secure their second MWL crown in the past three seasons and qualify for the NAIA Football Championship Series for the first time since 1975.

Batterson topped the Statesmen with 12 tackles, including one for loss. He also broke up two passes.

For the year, Batterson has tallied 63 tackles, including four for loss. He has one-half sack, three interceptions, five pass breakups, three fumble recoveries (one returned for touchdown) and one forced fumble.

Kerrigan did a little bit of everything with his leg Saturday. The junior made both of his extra points, connected on a 28-yard field goal, and averaged 58.5 yards per kickoff with two touchbacks. His 12th field goal broke the program’s single-season record.

He also punted four times for a 33.8 yard average (long of 48 yards).

For the year, Kerrigan is 33-of-39 in extra points and 12-of-14 in field goals. He has also punted 19 times for a 39.0 yard average with six inside the 20-yard line.
