McCain and Obama campaigns trade jabs

By MIKE GLOVER
Associated Press

DES MOINES

Supporters of GOP presidential candidate John McCain derided Barack Obama’s foreign policy experience, prompting backers of the likely Democratic nominee to bemoan what they said is the Republican’s negative campaigning.

Supporters of McCain on Tuesday discussed a campaign video that accused Obama of shifting positions on Iraq for political gains and noted his lack of military service. They also derided Obama’s current trip to the Mideast and Europe.

“John McCain doesn’t need to make campaign stops overseas in an attempt to beef up his foreign policy credentials,” retired Maj. Gen. Evan Hultman said at a Statehouse news conference.

Obama supporters, including state Attorney General Tom Miller, responded that such statements and a new McCain television commercial that blames Obama for high gasoline prices were “politics as usual.” They questioned McCain’s earlier comments that he would wage a positive campaign.

“John McCain had said he would conduct a positive campaign, so it’s particularly disappointing to see him turning to these negative ads,” Miller said.

At the Obama news conference, Miller was joined by more than a dozen veterans who support Obama.

Hultman was also joined by more than a dozen veterans at an event that focused on McCain’s years of experience on foreign policy issues.

Dick Myers, an Obama supporter and former legislator, said Obama’s plan to gradually bring U.S. forces home from Iraq would resonate with Americans. He noted polls that indicate support for ending the war.

But veteran Republican activist Chuck Larson Sr. said veterans and other voters will respond to McCain’s experience.

“These are dangerous times,” said Larson. “Hope alone is not a strategy.”

And Hultman rejected claims that Republicans were launching negative attacks.

“You can call it whatever you want, but we’re just stating the facts,” he said.
