Kim Komando answers your Web, computer questions

OSKALOOSA — Q. I’m trying to delete an unneeded online account. The website won’t let me. What can I do?

A. Every online service handles accounts differently. The site Delete Your Account helps you delete accounts on many common services. Visit Komando.com/news for a link. You can also Google the service name and “delete account.” Some services offer no way to delete an account. In that case, go into the account and remove all your information. Also, make sure the password isn’t one you’ve used elsewhere. If so, you’ll want to change it. If the account is compromised, it won’t endanger your information.

Q. My Mac logs me in automatically on startup. This doesn’t seem very secure. Anyone with access to my laptop could read my files. Is there a way to fix this?

A. Yes, it’s easy. Click the Apple logo at the top left of the screen. Select System Preferences. Click on Security and select the General tab. Check the box next to “Disable automatic login.” Now you will need to enter a password on every startup. Also, try selecting “Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver.” Then set your Mac to log off automatically after a period of inactivity. These settings will make it harder for someone else to access your computer.
