Question of the Week: What should Kirk Ferentz do?

By DUANE NOLLEN
The Oskaloosa Herald

OSKALOOSA

A majority of people who answered this past week’s Question of the Week: Who won the first presidential debate? answered McCain.

Thirty-five — 59.32 percent — answered MCCAIN while 24 — 40.68 percent — said OBAMA.

The Question of the Week poll is not scientific and only reflects the opinions of those Internet users who have chosen to participate. The Question of the Week is just another way the Herald’s readers can voice their opinions about issues that affect them.

This week’s Question of the Week deals with the state of the Iowa Hawkeyes’ football season.

Hawkeye fans, we need to huddle.

Only nine points have kept the Iowa Hawkeyes from an undefeated season so far. However, fumbles and a couple of interceptions at inopportune moments during the past three games have made the Red Zone the Dead Zone for the Hawkeyes. At midpoint of the season, the Hawkeyes are now 3-3.

This leaves me scratching my head.

The Hawkeyes started the season off right with three convincing victories. Iowa running back Shonn Greene is one of the top rushers in the nation with six 100 yard-plus games — that means the offensive line is playing much better this year. The defense is stout, and Oskaloosa standout Tyler Sash has been making big plays during his first year of active status. The field goal unit is much improved from last year. The only question mark has been who would be quarterback: Jake Christensen or Ricky Stanzi. It’s been a toss up, but since the 1-point loss to Pitt, it has been Stanzi.

Stanzi, a sophomore, has had his growing pains — he threw an interception and had two fumbles against Michigan State this past weekend. But, he hit wide receiver Andy Brodell in stride for dramatic touchdowns the past two games. Stanzi has potential, he just needs a little time to develop.

So, after two six-win seasons, will this year be a repeat? Can the Hawkeyes turn it around and make it to a bowl game? If this season is a flop, will heads roll in Iowa City? Ferentz has had the same leadership on offense and defense during his tenure as Iowa head coach. Is it time for an off-season change?

What do you think?

Should Ferentz stay the course and be patient? Should he change offensive and defensive coordinators? Should he dust off his resume?

This week’s Question of the Week: What should Kirk Ferentz do: Stay the course? Change coordinators? Dust off his resume?

People can vote on The Herald’s Web site, oskaloosa.com, from Monday through noon on Friday. Then, votes will be tallied and published the following Monday.
