Question of the Week: Was the Supreme Court right to strike down the Washington, D.C., gun ban?

By DUANE NOLLEN

OSKALOOSA

Seventy percent of those who answered this past week’s Question of the Week: Is Global Warming/climate change fact or fiction? answered FACT.

Fifty-six — 70 percent — answered FACT while 24 — 30 percent — said FICTION.

The Question of the Week poll is not scientific and only reflects the opinions of those Internet users who have chosen to participate. The Question of the Week is just another way the Herald’s readers can voice their opinions about issues that affect them.

This week’s Question of the Week deals with the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Washington, D.C., gun ban.

Thursday, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Washington, D.C., ban on handguns by a 5-4 vote. This is the first time the Supreme Court has ruled on the Second Amendment. People can now own handguns and have them in their homes for self-defense.

Other issues remain such as does this ruling extend to having a gun outside the home.

The Associated Press reported a mixed reaction to the ruling.

Republican presidential candidate John McCain called the ruling “a landmark victory for Second Amendment freedom.”

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley called it “very frightening” and predicted more violence on city streets.

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama sat on the fence and said the ruling “will provide much-needed guidance to local officials across the country.”

What do you think?

This week’s Question of the Week: Was the Supreme Court right to strike down the Washington, D.C., gun ban? YES, NO, DON’T CARE

People can vote on The Herald’s Web site, oskaloosa.com, from Monday through noon on Friday. Then, votes will be tallied and published the following Monday.
