Question of the Week: Is this year's flood worse than The Flood of '93?

By DUANE NOLLEN
The Oskaloosa Herald

OSKALOOSA

Almost three-quarters of readers who answered this past week’s Question of the Week: Should Obama pick Hillary Clinton to be his running mate? said NO.

Nine — 20.93 percent — said YES while 31 — 72.09 percent — answered NO and three — 6.98 percent — replied DON’T CARE.

The Question of the Week poll is not scientific and only reflects the opinions of those Internet users who have chosen to participate. The Question of the Week is just another way the Herald’s readers can voice their opinions about issues that affect them.

This week’s Question of the Week deals with the floods that have swamped Iowa.

Heavy rains have sent Iowa’s rivers raging out of their banks and the precipitation has put the state’s crops in jeopardy. The Des Moines River has flooded downtown Des Moines and has caused officials at Saylorville Lake and Lake Red Rock to release water to ease the burden. Cities downstream such as Eddyville and Ottumwa have raised sandbag berms to reinforce levees protecting the communities. Other smaller rivers, such as the South Skunk, also have flooded. Late this past week, volunteers gathered at the Oskaloosa water works to build sandbag levees to protect the community’s water supply. Farm fields across the state are either under water, have standing water or are barren and brown from water that has receded. It’s anyone’s guess on what the crop yield will be this year.

People have compared this year’s floods to those of 1993. Many say it’s worse than ‘93.

What do you think?

This week’s Question of the Week: Is this year’s flood worse than The Flood of ‘93? YES or NO.

People can vote on The Herald’s Web site, oskaloosa.com, from Monday through noon on Friday. Then, votes will be tallied and published the following Monday.
