CHUCK QUILLIN

NEW SHARON — Chuck Quillin, 77, of New Sharon, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at his home in New Sharon.

Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in New Sharon. Interment will be held in the Friends Cemetery in New Sharon. Visitation will begin after 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Harvest Community Fellowship or the New Sharon Area Historical Society. Charles (Chuck) Edward Quillin was born at home in rural New Sharon on July 10, 1935, to Howard and Ruth (Ankeney) Quillin. He graduated from New Sharon High School in 1954. On June 24, 1960, he married the love of his life, Marietta Hamre, from Oskaloosa. He worked for D &P Lumber, PAMCO, Pittsburgh Des Moines and then 33 years for Chicago Bridge and Iron. His work with CBI took him to multiple states from New York to Hawaii. His first overseas job was in Saudi Arabia in 1966. From there he worked in Iran, Italy, Jamaica, Surinam, Guyana, Ecuador, the Bahamas, Panama and Puerto Rico, He built tanks at the Alaska pipeline terminal, built a riverboat in Elgin, Ill., and lined a tunnel for the creation of a hydroelectric plant at the Kingsley Dam in Ogallala, Neb. He was honored many times in his work for keeping his men safe and for the excellent quality of the jobs completed. His retirement years were spent wagon training, working at the Iowa State Fair and teasing his grandchildren (and anyone else he encountered). Memorable wagon train adventures included the Mormon Trail, California Trail, Bozeman Trail, Military Trail and many trips with the Ox Bow Company from southern Iowa. He was also an active in civic organizations such as the Historical Society, New Sharon Alumni Association and the Capri Theater Board. He was a member of the Harvest Community Fellowship Church.

Chuck was committed to his work but even more committed to his family. He is survived by his wife of 52 years and his two devoted daughters: Diana (Michael O’Leary), of Amman, Jordan, and Valerie (Rusty Lindenman), of Barnes City. He also leaves behind two grandchildren, Brooke Lindenman, of Grinnell, and Aaron Lindenman, of Barnes City; sisters Kay Hardeman and Barb (Jim) Greenway, brother David (Kathy) Quillin; foster brother Bob (Waunita) Karbinas; brother-in-law Paul (Myrtledell) Hamre and sister-in-law Norma Herman; nieces and nephews; and countless good friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister in infancy, Mary Alice Quillin.
