She attended Black Oak School near Lynnville until 1940, when the family moved to a farm near Forest Home in Poweshiek County, where she attended Forest Home School through eighth grade. In 1967, Martha began working at Continental/Big Smith Overall Factory, where she worked as a seamstress. Martha and Joe moved to Florida in 1980 where they spent a year and then returned to Oskaloosa. In 1984, they moved to Gainesville, Mo., and in 2000 they returned to Oskaloosa. Martha wasn’t allowed to go to high school as a young woman, but at the age of 51 she earned her GED. She was a life member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and she attended the New Sharon Friends Church.
