OSKALOOSA —

Beo T. Hoang, 89, of Oskaloosa, passed away Tuesday evening, Oct. 29, 2013, at the MHP Hospice Services Serenity House in Oskaloosa.

Beo Thi Hoang was born, July 9, 1924, in Sonla, Vietnam.  She married Pe Van Hoang, May 9, 1950, in Vietnam. Because of political upheaval in Vietnam, the family was forced to move to Laos in 1978. In 1980, they were again forced to become refugees in Thailand.  They were able to come to the United States in 1981 and eventually settled in Oskaloosa.  Beo was never able to have a formal education, but after coming to Oskaloosa she eagerly learned the English language from tutors from the First Christian Church and the Central United Methodist Church.  She loved reading, writing and copying the English and Laotian languages.

Beo’s family includes two sons: Pu and his family, of Sonla, Vietnam, and Keo Hoang, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two daughters: Koi and her family, of Sonla, Vietnam, and Phauh (Bouangeun) Xayakoummane, of Oskaloosa; her grandchildren: Vilaisak (Haikham) Xayakoummane, of Oskaloosa, and their son Isaak, Anoulak  Xayakoummane, of Oskaloosa, Latsany (Phongsanh) Bouavong, of Springfield, Ill., and their children Mason and McKenzie Bouavong, Sauksavanh Ning Xayakoummane, of Oskaloosa, and many more grandchildren and great-grandchildren in Vietnam. She is also survived by a sister Nho Tong, of Grenoble, France.

In addition to her parents, Beo was preceded in death by her husband and many siblings.

A funeral service for Beo will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday afternoon, Nov. 2, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel.  Cremation will follow the service and private burial of her ashes will be in Old White Cemetery at a later time.  Visitation will begin at 11 a.m., Friday at the funeral chapel; the family will greet visitors from 5-7 p.m.  Memorials may be made to MHP Hospice Services Serenity House.  Memories and condolences may be sent by visiting the online obituary guest book at www.gvlfuneralchapel.com.
