WHAT CHEER —
Gayle Bunnell, 61, of What Cheer, passed away suddenly Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, at his home in What Cheer.
He was born Feb. 4, 1952, in Oskaloosa, the son of Chester and Jean Jeanette Hurmence Bunnell. He graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1970. Gayle enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1971, he served as a shipping and receiving clerk, and was honorably discharged in 1972. In August of 1973, he was united in marriage to Alladeen Tapley, they later divorced. Gayle worked a variety of jobs including, factories in Iowa and for Pizza Hut in many states. Gayle was a free spirit, he saw much of the United States by hitch-hiking. He enjoyed going to the casino, cooking, gardening and watching Westerns. He also enjoyed the company of his four cats. Gayle attended the Good News Chapel in Oskaloosa.
His family includes his two daughters, Melanie (and Duane) Adney, of What Cheer, and Heather Daughenbaugh (and Brian Hanna), of What Cheer; six grandchildren; two brothers, Dennis (and Rita) Bunnell, of Moline, Ill., and Larry (and Shirley) Bunnell, of Indianola; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Gayle was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother in infancy.
As was Gayle’s wish, his body has been cremated. A memorial service will be held Friday, Sept. 27, at 10:30 a.m. in the Good News Chapel in Oskaloosa with the Rev. Rick Bunnell officiating. A graveside memorial service and burial was held Friday, Sept. 6, at the Iowa Veterans’ Cemetery in Van Meter. Memorials may be made to Heather Daughenbaugh to help with funeral expenses.
