Jerald Nelvin Van Wyk was born near Harrison, S.D., on Sept. 5, 1939, the son of Herbert and Marie Van Wyk. He passed away at the Pella Regional Health Center on Sunday, Aug. 4, 2013, after a valiant battle with cancer.
As a young boy, he lived near Onawa, Tyconic, and Rodney in northwestern Iowa where he began kindergarten. With his parents, he moved to Sully, Pella, and later Prairie City. He graduated from Prairie City High School with the class of 1958 during which time he worked at Caldwell Feed. After graduation he took a job in Pella, first at the Pella Wagon factory and then as an apprentice carpenter for the Roorda & Engbers housing contractors.
He met Dorothy Van Englehoven during the previous summer of 1957, they fell in love, and were married by Dr. P.Y. De Jong at the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella on Aug. 7, 1957. Jerry began working at Pella Rolscreen Company earlier that spring where he completed a total of 50 years employment, retiring in 2009.
During their first years together they lived in an apartment and then lived at 1212 Broadway in Pella for 52 years. They were blessed with five children: Randal, Regin, Rustan, Karmi and Rylan.
Jerry will be greatly missed and remembered dearly by: his wife, Dorothy; their five children: Randy (Lynne) Van Wyk, of Urbandale, Reggie (Anna) Van Wyk, of Peoria, Ariz., Rustan (Cindy) Van Wyk of Lumberton, N.C., Karmi Van Wyk, of Miami, Fla., and Rylan (Pam) Van Wyk, of Pella; his six grandchildren: Derrick, Jessica, Justin, Joel, Kaitlyn and Carey Van Wyk; his siblings: Silvan Jay (Gina) Van Wyk, Harley Van Wyk, Dennis Van Wyk; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Clarence (Luella) Van Englehoven.

Jerry was a wonderful, loving father and provider for his family. He was a great handyman and proudly used his various skills for car repair and maintenance, home carpentry, yard projects, and whatever was needed. He was often one of the first to offer assistance to anyone. He was known by many as a great humorist and genuinely a friend to all. He loved the outdoors being a hunter and fisherman and loved time with his grandchildren. He was a faithful member of the Covenant Reformed Church in Pella.
