LEBANON, Mo. —
Carl D. Cortez, 65, of Knoxville, passed away Sunday, May 5, 2013, in Lebanon, Mo.
He was born Thursday, Jan. 1, 1948, in Woodland, Calif., the son of Frank and Mildred Cannady Cortez. Carl attended Albia schools until 8th grade and later received his GED. Following school he worked for many construction crews on job sites around the country. On Oct. 7, 1973, Carl was united in marriage to Deloris Mersman in Washington, Iowa, and she died June 30, 2003. He enjoyed cooking, camping, and any type of construction work. He had a skill for building anything from the ground up and had a love for kids. Carl was known as being a selfless person and would help whoever was in need for little or nothing in return.
His family includes his daughter: Monise Rodden, of Lebanon, Mo.; four grandchildren; four brothers: Joseph (and Becky) Pillars, of Quincy, Ill., Frank Cortez Jr., of Knoxville, Raymon (and Mary) Cortez, of Cedar Rapids, and Verle (and Connie) Kerr Jr., of Magnolia, Texas; five sisters: Lola (and Tony) Harbin, of Oskaloosa, Connie Broadhead, of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Sandy Sylvis, of Knoxville, Violet ( and David) Mitchell, of Knoxville, and Yolanda ( and Jose) Rodriguez, of Williams, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a step father: Verle Kerr Sr.; a brother: Henry Pillars and a sister: Rader Ruby.
