DARYL VANDEGEEST

OSKALOOSA —

Daryl D. Vandegeest, age 65, of Oskaloosa, suddenly passed away as the result of an accident, July 15, 2013, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. 

Daryl was born, Oct. 27, 1947, in Oskaloosa to Andrew and Wilma Mae Van Arkel Vandegeest. He was a 1966 graduate of Oskaloosa High School and then attended A.I.B. in Des Moines. Following his education, he enlisted in the U.S. Marines Reserve, serving his basic training in California. He returned to Oskaloosa and served in the reserves for six years. Upon his return, he married Pam Denburger and to this union three children were born; they later divorced.  May 6, 1984, he married Gwen R. Dunham in Oskaloosa.  Daryl began his working career on the family farm, and later was involved in a partnership with his parents in Van’s Feed and Fertilizer in Oskaloosa. When Van’s Feed and Fertilizer closed he started Oskaloosa Grain, Ltd., a trucking company in 1992. 

Daryl was a member of Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa and a 21-year member of the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Posse. He enjoyed working with horses, team roping with his friend Rich, and calf roping; he was the first president of the Iowa Rodeo Cowboys Association.  He also enjoyed motorcycling and camping with his wife Gwen, and friends, Rich and Barb.

He is survived by his wife, Gwen, of Oskaloosa; two daughters: Dr. Kimberly Ann Vandegeest-Wallace and her husband, Mark Wallace, of Kansas City, Mo., and Tessie (Chris) Skeels,  also of Kansas City, Mo.; two sons: Mike (Molly) Sterner, of Oskaloosa, and Robb (Steph) Sterner, of Bussey; 12 grandchildren, which includes Tiffany Vandegeest Rossi  who Daryl and Gwen raised since she was 3 years old;  two great-grandchildren; two sisters: Jan (Ron) Padgett and Jeanine Pierce, both of Oskaloosa.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Amie Vandegeest.
