Lael Mary Pierson, 92, of Oskaloosa, died Thursday, July 12, 2013, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Lael was born June 22, 1921, in Wheatfield, Ind., the second of six children born to William and Myrtle Custard. She attended school in Indiana, Colorado, and graduated from Buffalo Center. On Friday, Sept. 13, 1939, she was united in marriage to Merritt W. Pierson in Cherokee. Merritt died on May 6, 2006. Lael and Merritt moved to Oskaloosa in 1963, to purchase the Coast to Coast Store. They owned and operated the store until their retirement. In retirement they enjoyed years of leisure in Brownsville, Texas. Lael enjoyed watching Nascar and playing Bingo.
Her family includes her three sons and their wives, Wayne and Pat Pierson, of San Antonio, Texas, Marvin and Martha Pierson, of Seabrook, Texas, and Marc and Joyce Pierson, of Oskaloosa; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruth Tiedens, Mildred Fuller and Arlene Simmons.
In addition to her husband, Lael was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Keith and Kenneth Custard.
As was Lael’s wish her body has been cremated and no services are planned.
