JOSEPH ‘JOE’ MCCURDY

OSKALOOSA — Joseph “Joe” McCurdy, 68, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, at his home in Oskaloosa.

Joseph William McCurdy, son of Eugene Royd and Lucille Nell Synhorst McCurdy, was born, Sept. 1, 1944, in Oskaloosa. He was a 1962 graduate of Oskaloosa High School and was also a graduate of William Penn College. For a brief time while in college, he served in the National Guard. Joe later studied computer science at Indian Hills Community College and was then employed for several years at Mahaska State Bank in their computer department. Joe married Charlotte Ann Shumate, June 14, 1970, at the Methodist church in Dunlap. In 1977, Joe went to work at Pella Corp. as a system’s analyst; he remained there for 30 years, retiring in 2007. He was a member of the Elks Club and Pheasants Forever, over a 20-year member of the Bass Club of Oskaloosa and a past member of the Shriners. If a day was over 50 degrees, Joe enjoyed golfing with friends at Elmhurst Country Club, now Oskaloosa Golf. He also enjoyed fishing, pheasant and deer hunting, coffee with friends and trips to Florida with family and friends for golf and camaraderie.

Joe’s family includes his wife of 42 years, Charlotte, of Oskaloosa; a daughter, Sarah McCurdy, of Oskaloosa; a son, Michael (Lynette) McCurdy, of Thornton, Colo.; grandsons: Brandon and Christian at home in Thornton; a sister, Elinor (Norm Gysbers) Arendt, of Columbia, Mo.; two sisters-in-law: Marcia (Steve) Hooten, of West Des Moines, and Debra (Ben) Benefield, of Roland, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by a son, Mark; a brother, Rodney; a nephew, Brian McCurdy; and a niece, Lori Arendt.

Funeral services for Joe will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday morning, Feb. 16, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Liz Colton of the St. Paul Congregational United Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m., Friday, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel; the family will be present from 5-7 p.m. to greet visitors. Memorials may be made to MHP Hospice Services Serenity House.
