CHARLES SHAFER

FEB. 8, 1942 — DEC. 2, 2013

OTTUMWA —

Charles William “Chuck” Shafer, 71, of Ottumwa, died at 10:35 a.m. Dec. 2, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City.

He was born Feb. 8, 1942, in Avery, to Merle and Dorothy Belzer Shafer. He married De Cornelison on Sept. 5, 1964. They later divorced.

Charles graduated from Eddyville High School in 1960, and served in the U.S. Navy from 1961 to 1965. He graduated from Indian Hills Community College, Centerville, with an AA in Business in 1968 and then graduated from the University of Colorado with a BA in Business in 1970.

While in Colorado, he worked for Western Electric and was the first City Manager for Eagle. He was a professional photographer for rodeos and owned his own shop in Vail.

In 1976, they moved back to Iowa where he worked for his uncle Donald Shafer. Over the next several years, he worked as the Director of Community Development for Oskaloosa, worked as a consultant and farmed. He found his calling as a realtor, and eventually opened his own company, Indian Hills Realty. He was a member of the Ottumwa Board of Realty for over 30 years.

He was a member of Pleasant Corners Church and O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 American Legion.

He enjoyed golfing, spending time with friends and family, playing music, hunting, fishing and telling a good joke!

Surviving are his children, Melinda Barrett, of Colorado, Christina Shafer, of Georgia, Tanya (Mike) O’Connor, of Tiffin, and Lonnie (Amy) Shafer, of Omaha, Neb.; five grandchildren, Stacy Barrett, Luke and Nick O’Connor, Ashleigh and Logan Shafer; two brothers, Ronald (Shellee) Shafer, of Eddyville, and David (Carol) Shafer, of Ottumwa; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be 12 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Corners Church of rural Eddyville with the Rev. Lois Williams officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Corners Cemetery with military services conducted by O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post No. 775 Veterans of Foreign Wars..

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Thursday at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Memorials may be made to Pleasant Corners Church.
