Bernard “Bernie” Johnson, age 71, of Hedrick, passed away on April 20, 2013, at his home.
Bernie was born Sept. 6, 1941, to Leroy “Johnny” and Mary (Stratton) Johnson in Oskaloosa. He married Janis Rae Akers on Jan. 27, 1968, in Eddyville.
Bernie graduated from Oskaloosa High School, Class of 1960. He was the president of his senior class. He served in the Marines for 4 years. He worked for Iowa Southern Utilities, later becoming, Alliant Energy for 29 years as a lineman and later a district superintendent. He retired in 1995. He later worked for Sigourney Tractor. He also did some electrical work. Bernie coached Little League and Babe Ruth for several years. He enjoyed bowling, golf, woodworking and remodeling. Bernie was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Bernie is survived by his wife, Janis; their son, Steven (Amy) Johnson, of Ottumwa; their daughter, Staci (David) Jasper, of rural Hedrick; and three grandsons: Caleb and Joshua Jasper and Ryan Johnson. Bernie is also survived by three sisters: Carol Barnes, of Oskaloosa, Sandy Guthrie, of Republican City, Neb., and Becky Ogden, of Nevada; and one brother: Mike Johnson, of Milton, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Margaret Chilcote.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 23, at the Eddyville Funeral Chapel. Bernie’s family will greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., on Wednesday, April 24, at the Eddyville Funeral Chapel of Eddyville, with the Rev. Jason Gutzmer officiating. Bernie’s wishes were to be cremated after services and a private family burial will be held at a later date.
A memorial has been established in Bernie’s name to the Hedrick First Responders. The Eddyville Funeral Chapel is assisting the family with services.
