GEORGE BENNETT

George Bennett, 81, of Oskaloosa, passed away Saturday afternoon, Oct. 12, 2013, at the MHP Hospice Services Serenity House in Oskaloosa. 

George Carlton Bennett Jr., son of George Carlton Sr. and Genevieve Evelyn (Johnson) Bennett, was born, Dec. 8, 1931, in Kansas City, Mo.  He was a 1950 graduate of Oskaloosa High School and went on to earn a B.S. in Engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1954.  In June of that year he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Army.  He earned his Masters Degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Missouri in 1964. Throughout George’s military career, he served in the Panama Canal Zone, Korea, South Vietnam, Thailand, Germany and the United States; he retired in January 1975 as a Lieutenant Colonel. While stationed in Vietnam, George met and married Anna Nguyen, Nov. 26, 1970.  Upon his return to Oskaloosa, George bought Lyle’s Jewelry from his father.  In addition to selling merchandise he also did watch and jewelry repair.  George sold the business in 1990 and sold real estate for a brief time before going to work at Pella Corp.  He retired in 2000. 

George was a member of the American Legion.  He enjoyed carpentry work and the out-of-doors.  He was an avid reader of western and crime novels and especially enjoyed the Des Moines Register where he also never missed solving the Sodoku puzzle.  He also loved watching military movies, westerns and MASH. 

His family includes his wife of almost 43 years, Anna Bennett, of Oskaloosa; his children: Lauri Ann Owens, of Neptune Beach, Fla.; Karen (Robert) Sweetapple, of Boca Raton, Fla.; Geoffrey (Angie) Bennett, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Katia (Timothy Crowley) Bennett, of Tokyo, Japan, and George (Carl) Bennett, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren; and a brother, Max J. Bennett, of San Clemente, Calif. 

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by a sister, Mary and a son, Quan Bennett.
