URBANDALE — Ruth Ann Rowland, age 89, of Urbandale and formerly of Eddyville, died peacefully on Saturday, May 24, 2014. She died from congestive heart failure at the Mercy Hospice in Johnston while surrounded by family.
Ruth was born on Jan. 22, 1925, on a farm near Competine, (near Farson in Wapello County). She was the only child of Jesse R. Green and Mae (Ida Mary) Hagan. Ruth was raised on a small farm located between Fremont and Hedrick, Iowa. She graduated from Hedrick High School in 1941 at the age of 16. Subsequently, Ruth moved to Ottumwa where she attended Iowa Success Business College and worked at True Fit Shoe Store in Ottumwa.
Ruth married George Maurice Rowland on Sept. 21, 1946. Ruth and Maurice lived in Eddyville until Maurice’s death in 1998. Ruth spent much of her adult life herding her rambunctious children through their early lives, especially after Maurice took a job requiring a significant amount of overnight travel. She also worked as a cook at the Eddyville High School. Upon retirement, Ruth and Maurice loved to spend winters with friends in Tucson, Arizona. In 2006, Ruth moved to an apartment in Urbandale, Iowa until failing health led her to assisted living and a nursing home in Des Moines in late 2013.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and an infant daughter, Barbara Ann. She is survived by five sons, Roger (Susan), of West Des Moines, Ron (Ann), of Des Moines, Rex (Sherri), of Folsom, Calif., Russ, of Sacramento, Calif., Randy (Margo), of Cedar Rapids; and one daughter, Nancy (Don) Fuqua, of Placerville, Calif. She is also survived by nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great great-grandson
Visitation for Ruth will be held from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 27, at the Eddyville Funeral Chapel. Ruth’s family will be present Tuesday evening from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 28, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church of Ottumwa. A luncheon will follow services and burial will be held after the luncheon at Calvary Cemetery also of Ottumwa.
The Eddyville Funeral Chapel is assisting Ruth’s family with services.
