WHAT CHEER — Funeral services for 93 year old Frances Karsten of What Cheer will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in What Cheer. Burial will be in the Indianapolis Cemetery west of What Cheer. Visitation began at noon on Monday with family present from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday evening.

Frances Margaret Karsten was born April 28, 1921, near What Cheer, the daughter of Charles and Stella Marr Courtney. She was a 1938 graduate of What Cheer High School and later attended William Penn and Iowa State Teachers College. Frances was united in marriage to Noel Karsten Aug. 16, 1947, in Rose Hill. She began her teaching career in 1939. Over the years, Frances has taught at Osage, Sandridge, Old Rose Hill and Indianapolis country schools before accepting a position at Tri-County where she retired in 1983. Frances was a member of the What Cheer Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and Bible school. She also enjoyed volunteering at the Keokuk County Fair and Harness races.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Noel Karsten, and seven brothers: Robert Courtney, Farrell Smith, Roscoe Courtney, Willard Courtney, Jim Courtney, Glen Courtney and Gene Courtney; a sister, Edith Lane.
Frances is survived by a brother, Don (Maxine) Courtney of Ottumwa and many nieces and nephews.
