The Oskaloosa Herald
Adriana Petrinella “Jean” Terpstra was born on May 1, 1921, to Stoffel and Johanna Zweedyk Meulpolder in the Netherlands.
Jean (as she was known upon arriving in the United States) and her family sailed by ship to the United States in 1923 setting up their home on a farm in the Pella area.
Jean graduated from the eighth grade and then started doing housework for the neighbor ladies for 50 cents an hour … high wages in those days.
On July 5, 1937, Jean was united in marriage with Gerald Terpstra in Lancaster, Mo. They were blessed with one daughter, Marlene Joan.
Jean was baptized and made confession of faith at the Third Reformed Church in Pella. Later, she and Gerald became charter members of the Heartland Reformed Church where she was active in the Willing Workers and Dorcas Society. Jean loved her farm home. She raised lots of chickens and sold eggs. She spent her days caring for her own yard, watching the cows out in the pasture and doing her own chores. She was still fortunate enough to continue those things until this past December. She loved spending cold days by her wood stove. She enjoyed going to 4-H and Open Cattle shows, and going to her great-grandchildren’s school activities, concerts and sporting events. She often went to basketball games with her sister, Johanna. She participated in volleyball and with the Early Risers Bowling League on Tuesday mornings for several years. She then bowled for 21 years on Tuesday evening with the Original Bowlers with perfect attendance all 21 years.
Jean went to her heavenly home Saturday, March 30, 2013, at Jefferson Place at the age of 91.
Those left to cherish her memory are: her daughter and her husband, Marlene and Harry Hartgers; her grandchildren, great-grandchildren; her sister, Gerdena Van Vark; her brother, Raymond (Donna) Meulpolder, and her brothers-in-law, Robert Terpstra and George Van Vark.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; parents-in-law; her husband, Gerald, June 20, 1991; and her siblings: Peter (Marie) Meulpolder, Nellie (Charlie) Moore, Johanna (Wilbur) Van Ee, Helen Van Vark and Francis Van Vark.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 4, at the Heartland Reformed Church in Pella. Burial will take place at the Oakwood Cemetery in Pella. The Garden Chapel Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
