GLIDE, Ore. — Donald Graham Good, 79, of Glide, Oregon and formerly of Oskaloosa, passed away after a short but valiant battle with Lymphoma, March 1,2013.

Don was born, Aug. 8, 1933, in Omaha, Neb. His parents were Inver E. Good and Ruth Louise (Stark) Good. He is survived by his wife, Jean and daughter, Jennifer. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lisa.

Don graduated from North High School in Omaha (1950). He was awarded degrees from Mid-West Bible and Missionary Institute (Bachelors in Theology), Goshen College (Bachelors of Arts), Concordia Seminary St. Louis (Master of Religious Education) and University of Iowa (Master of Arts & Ph.D.) He also performed postdoctoral work at University of Illinois, University of California Berkeley and the University of Iowa. Don was supported through much of his educational pursuits by Jean until he received a full-time teaching position in 1964. For 34 years, Don was a Professor of Religion and Philosophy at William Penn College in Oskaloosa. He was chair of the Religion and Philosophy Department (1971-1979) and the Humanities Department (1979-1989 and 1993-1996). Prior to his career at William Penn, Don was a pastor of the Windham Community Church in Oxford, Iowa, and the West Branch Iowa Friends Church.

Don served on the Mahaska County, Iowa Extension Council (1972- 1976) and Mahaska County Democratic Chairman (1978-1981). He was a member of the American Academy of Religion, the American Association of University Professors, the Iowa State Sheriffs and Deputies Association and the National Rifle Association. The city of Oskaloosa awarded Don their Distinguished Service Award for his assistance with their Citizens Police Academy (1966). He also received the Distinguished Scholar Award from William Penn College (1998), as well as President’s Excellence in Education Award (1998).

After his retirement, Don and Jean moved to Glide, Oregon (1998). Don became active in his new home by becoming a volunteer board member of the Senior Outreach Prevention Education Council, a member of the County Commissioner appointed Douglas County Senior Services Advisory Board, a board member of the Douglas County, Oregon Historical Society and served on the Glide Water Association Board. Don was an active member of the Glide Community Club and played many a “Golden Oldie” for those attending dinners at the Glide Senior Center.

Don’s passion also remained for helping local law enforcement. After he completed the Umpqua Regional Police Reserve Training Program (1999), he served as a volunteer for the Roseburg, Ore., Police Department. In 2000, Don was sworn in as a reserve deputy for Douglas County, Oregon Sheriff’s Department where he served until 2012. He also wrote many historical articles about law enforcement for the Sheriff’s newsletter.

Don touched many lives and his wit and wisdom will be missed. A Celebration of Life will be held at a date and location to be determined.
