Funeral services for Marjorie L. Van Gorp will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 17, at the Leighton Christian Reformed Church.  Visitation will begin at noon on Tuesday, July 16, at the Pella Garden Chapel Funeral Home.           

Marjorie Louise Van Gorp was born on Nov. 4, 1924, at the family home near Sully.  She was the third of 12 children born to Oney and Katie (Bruxvoort) Arkema.  Marjorie passed away at the Oskaloosa Care Center on Sunday, July 14, 2013, at the age of 88.

Marjorie received her early education at the Sully Christian School.  On Jan. 16, 1947, she was united in marriage with Freemon Van Gorp in Sully.  They were blessed with four children: Earl, Byron, Lorna and Warren.  The family farmed in the Sully, Oskaloosa and Leighton areas.

In 1955 Marjorie and Freemon became members of the Leighton Christian Reformed Church.  Marjorie was an active member of the Mary Bethany Ladies Society.  She enjoyed flowers, gardening, crocheting, knitting, sewing and needlepoint.  She was well known for helping family, friends, and neighbors in time of need.  She also loved her family life and will be remembered as a loving and caring mother.

Those left to cherish her memory are her four children: Earl and Marcia Van Gorp of Peoria, Iowa, Byron and Paulette Van Gorp of Pella, Lorna and Carl Nunnikhoven, of Oskaloosa, and Warren Van Gorp, of St. Louis, Mo.; eight grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; her siblings: Bernard and Cornelia Arkema, Betty and Earl Dykema, Alan Arkema, June Rozendaal, Hermina Rolffs, Grace and Harris Van Kooten, Lewis and Jean Arkema, and Edwin and Leona Arkema; the following sisters-in-law: Margaret Van Gorp, Ruth (Vernon) Ringenberg, and Dorothy Vander Pol; and two brothers-in-law: Verlan (Marilyn) Van Gorp, and Eugene (Luanna) Van Gorp.

Marjorie was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband in 1999; her siblings: John and Iva Arkema, Dormand and Beulah Arkema, Jr. Rozendaal, Henry Rolffs, and Nelson and Dorothy Arkema.

Burial will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery near Leighton.  Memorials may be given to the Back to God Hour or the Bible League.  The Pella Garden Chapel Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
